Saint-Petersburg State Marine Engineering University (SPbGMTU) has a 100-year history and is a sole leading educational and research facility in Russia, which prepares experts in fields that join all stages of marine engineering life cycle including research, design, construction, mechanical engineering, upgrade, and renovations. At the same time, the University is one of the largest centers in the country and in the world in the sphere of fundamental researches related to development of marine engineering, as well as exploration of the World Ocean. Research laboratory (NILE PEKS) is organized at university on faculty of a Ship Theory in 1985.
The scientific chief of laboratory is Professor Yrie Nikolaevich Kormilicin. The main direction of works is hydrodynamics of nonconventional means and ways of marine objects movement control and decrease of their resistance. Works were carried out basically under orders of VMF (military marine sea fleet) and SOE CDB ME "Rubin". Scientific researches and development which are carried out in laboratory, are engaged in Canada (University of British Colombia), in England (National physical laboratory - NРL), in Germany (Institute fur Experimentelle Stromungsmechanic des Deutchen. AVA Gottingen), Japan (Osaka University, University of Tokyo, Kobe University) and the USA (David Taylor Research Center and Naval Ship, University of Washington, Lockheed Ocean Laboratory). In NILE PEKS work 4 professors, 6 scientific employees and 5 technical-engineer experts of the top qualification. Besides the university professorial and teaching structure is actively involved in realization of research works of laboratory. The laboratory places in three premises of university the general area of 240 sq.m. There are 160 sq.m. from them for scientific and technical group and 80 sq.m - for a modeling site. NILE PEKS also uses the following scientific and technical university base: plant of marine experimental equipment, hydrodynamics tunnel, wind tunnel, model basin and sea range in. Primorsk.
Marine Innovation Technologies Ltd (MIT Ltd). The basic purpose of this society: investigations, design, manufacturing and sales of innovative marine engineering associated with tourist, research and other dedicated transport facilities. General Director: Vladimir Taradonov, candidate of technical science, head of research laboratory for improvement of operating features for vessels and underwater objects (NIL PEKS). He is an USSR inventor (1986); he has more than 60 inventor's certificates and patents for inventions (including patents of Poland, Germany and Great Britain). He had published 150 scientific and technical reports and 32 scientific studies. In 2004, V.S. Taradonov became a prize-winner of All-Russia Contest "Engineer of the year" in nomination "Shipbuilding" and was awarded a medal and a certificate "Professional engineer of Russia".
JSC Shipbuilding plant "Severnaya Verf" is one of leading and modern shipbuilding companies in Russia. During perennial history, JSC Shipbuilding plant "Severnaya Verf" constructed about 400 ships and vessels of various purposes. The shipyard constructed missile cruisers, destroyers, large anti-submarine warfare ships, frigates, escort ships, mine-sweepers, tanker ships, dry-cargo ships, timber carriers, container carriers, passenger and fishing vessels, tugboats, ferries and pontoon docks, as well as research vessels and RO-RO type vessels. Nowadays, the shipyard engineering services developed a strategy for development and retrofit of production capacities with consideration to the outlook of company development.
Today Marine Innovative Technologies Ltd, in cooperation with leading experts in underwater engineering from Admiralty Shipyards and Shipbuilding plant "Severnaya Verf", as well as SOE CDB ME "Rubin" has developed design plans and specifications for basic hull structures, systems and gears of underwater vehicle. In addition, following successful negotiations with German company Rohm GmbH and their representatives in Moscow, ZAO Orgsteklo, 1.5 t of special-purpose sheet acrylic plastic was supplied to Russia for manufacturing of transparent structures for tourist underwater vehicle by ООО Roshibus in Dzerzhinsk. Required wooden and metal matrixes for UV pressure and outside hull manufactured by MIT Ltd and Shipbuilding plant "Severnaya Verf" will be supplied there also. Today Shipbuilding plant "Severnaya Verf" is engaged in production of structures for UV rotor propulsors. According to agreement between MIT Ltd and Maxon Motor company from Switzerland with direct involvement of company representative in Saint-Petersburg, i.e. ZAO Aviton, in the nearest future UV designers will receive electric drives for tourist underwater vehicle.
